Learning to read the landscape can be very a valuable survival and permaculture skill. Being able to read a landscape helps you design a site, predict water flow, place trees in a good position for their growth, find water and flood plains with pockets of good soil, predict erosion, sunburn, frost and windburn.
Combine this with experience in measuring and reading contours and you are better ready to design a site.
