You don’t have to have a rooster in your flock! Hens will lay eggs, eat weeds and scratch the garden happily without a rooster. In fact, hens can be better behaved without a rooster. Roosters are for people who know how to handle chickens well, want to breed chicks and are prepared to cull an over supply of males. If you don’t want to kill your own chickens, simply support specialist poultry breeders who love rare breeds and offer to buy their “less than perfect” show hens which will be more than perfect for your garden.
